Classic Classical Music

So I picked up at work today 1001 Classical Recordings You Must Hear Before You Die. Guess I am in the mood for some enlightened listening. The first selection is in the pre-1700s and is Carmina burana. There is a great concert by UC Davis on Youtube if your interested in the hour long music. Carmina burana is actually a collection of Latin and Early German songs compiled in 1847 by Johann Andreas Schmeller. This is not church music, although I don't know Latin or Early German so I have to take the word of the book. The first two or three minutes, though, everyone knows. Just play the Youtube video play and you'll have an "Aha" moment

Wikipedia lists a few ways this has been used recently. Here's some highlights.

  • Glee-showdown between Will and Sue in Season 1, Episode 7
  • Hunt for Red October soundtrack
  • Used in trailers for Waterworld, Paul Blart Mall Cop, and Nutty Professor.
  •  Tons of sports teams and a couple of wrestlers use it. Graduation classes have used it.
Let's face it, it's everywhere. At least now, we now what we are hearing in the next movie trailer!
