I have signed up for two book challenges and have just signed up for a third. So the next few weeks I am gonna focus on those challenges. In addition, I have a pile by the bed and our next book club read is a chunkster. So the challenges I am signed up for, details, and websites just so you guys know why you are going to see more individual book reviews (as I have to link the book review back to the challenge).
The first one I signed up for this year was War Through The Generations. They focus on a different war every year and this year is the Civil War. I need to read at least 3 and up to 5 books that focus on in some way on the Civil War. I have two that I pulled out of my TBR shelves. Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier and Story of the Confederacy by Robert Selph Henry. Then I just need to get another Civil War book from the library. Tony Horowitz (Confederates in the Attic) has a new book out or coming out about John Brown and the start of the Civil War.
The next challenge is called What's In a Name and the premise is pretty simple. She gives you six words and as you read, if the tittle fits, you write a review and link it back. There's honestly no reason I shouldn't have this about done. Lazyness and a crappy summer is my excuse(s). I am figuring some of my titles from other challenges should overlap.
The third challenge and the one I just signed up for is called RIP (Readers Imbibing Peril VI). From September 1-October 31 you need to read something that's spooky, horror, thriller, or suspenseful. I am going to sign up to read 4 books before Halloween. I have pulled a copy of Kingfisher Spooky Stories. Yes it's a kid book, but it was on my shelves. I also pulled off of my shelves Haunting of Louisiana by Barbara Sillery and I got a copy of The Other Side of Dark by Sarah Smith from the library.I also have, and need to read, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Then I just need one more-perhaps some Steven King or I have American Gods by Gaiman I have been trying to get to for a while now.
And this is maybe half of what is on my bedside at the time. Wilder Life by Wendy McClure is good but slow. Then there's A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion, Agent X, Book Thief, Soul of the Sacred Earth, Thrifty, and Sitka. That's enough variety to please a small group of readers!
2 muses:
Can't wait for your thoughts on the Civil War books. I'll be reading Cold Mountain in Dec. for a read-along. I've read a lot of Ann Rinaldi books for the challenge, so if you're looking for a quick and entertaining read and don't mind YA books, she's written a lot of good Civil War books.
Good luck with your challenges!
