The Other Side

What happens to good books when a reader gets hit by a bad slump? It took me nearly three weeks to conquer The Other Side of Darkness by Sarah Smith and it shouldn't have taken that long.

This young adult novel covers a lot of heavy ground including slavery, reparations, ghosts, and mental illness. Law and Katie fight each other, themselves, their parents, and society to uncover the truth about a historic Boston home that is scheduled for demolition.

This is great ghost story with Katie able to see and talk to ghosts. As you can imagine, this is both good and bad and she is able to sketch out what she sees when she sees ghosts. This book was written to have you see both sides of the story-both Law and Katie's. However, I felt that Law was really more the central character. Without Law, the story would falter. But I like Katie. I can't help but admire her growth through the novel and how she slays her personal demons to uncover her gift in the second sight she has been given. I also like the fact, this is set in Boston and not the South.

Yes, I am doing short and sweet reviews. I had/have three to get posted and I've procrastinated enough. Three-for Friday.

Oh, this one is being linked to the R.I.P. IV challenge.
